Manufacturing execution systems (MES) are computerized systems used in manufacturing, to track and document the transformation of raw materials to finished goods. The MES is a layer of applications that integrates business systems, or Information Systems (IT), with the systems that control the shop floor systems, such as PLCs, DCSs , SCADA systems and process control systems.
At the heart of MES is OEE, or Overall Equipment Effectiveness. Supporting OEE are a number of other MES functions, including:
MES is also often referred to as Manufacturing Operations Management (MOM), and is defined in ISA-95 part 3.
The MES layer is the primary lever that allows you to operate your business to your competitive advantage. The IT systems simply ensure that orders get entered, people get paid etc. Control Systems simply ensure that machines operate reliably and repetitively.
It is the MES system layer that allows you to measure track products through your plant, measure quality at each stage, schedule operations to maximise resource utilisation and monitor downtime reasons and eliminate problematic issues. In addition, a corporate dashboard can provide real time display of all these metrics and provide visibility to all stakeholders.
The MES System is the core Intellectual Property of YOUR business. It differentiates YOU from YOUR competitors.
